Mobile phones off the menu in LA restaurant

Comments Off on Mobile phones off the menu in LA restaurant

To discourage diners from using mobile phones at the table, an LA restaurant is offering discounts for customers who leave their phones at the door. It’s become a habit of many to take their phones out at the table. How many times have you seen a couple out for a meal, where one (or even both) of them are more engrossed in their smart phone than the person opposite? They could be checking messages, frantically tapping their touchscreen or fretting over work emails. So should we answer the phone or text message during dinner? The smart phone has changed our lives over the last few years with e-mail, web, games, facebook and even the latest sports highlights available at our fingertips, 24/7. Perhaps the most revealing thing is that research reveals people find the use of mobile phones in public places hugely irritating – but new research shows even more of us are doing it. In the study of ‘mobile manners’, Intel interviewed 12,000 people across the globe. 67 per cent of European respondents said that people talking too loudly on their phones, in public spaces, was top of the hate list. The survey also revealed that 40 per cent of respondents were guilty of typing in front on others. Use of mobile phones in public, however, is something the survey results indicated most people continued to do inconsiderately, even if they’re not aware of it at the time. Debrett’s, the etiquette authority, recommends switching off your phone in all social situations. “People in the flesh deserve more attention than a gadget,”
